LONDON, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- The official British police investigation into the 1997 death of Princess Diana and her boyfriend said the Paris car crash was an accident and not murder.
The 832-page report released Thursday by John Stevens, the former commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, refuted rumors of assassination plots.
"There was no conspiracy to murder any of the occupants of that car," Stevens said at a London news conference.
Diana, 36, Dodi Al Fayed, 42, and chauffeur Henri Paul, 41, died when their black Mercedes crashed in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in August 1997 while being pursued by news photographers. Bodyguard Trevor Rees was badly injured but survived.
The Times of London said Stevens briefed Prince Charles and his two sons, William and Harry, on the report Wednesday, and later Fayed's father, Mohamed.
The report said Paul had twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood and also had traces of undisclosed medication. It said all three fatalities could have been prevented had seat belts been worn.
