Denver County Fair will feature joint-rolling contest this summer

DENVER, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Now that recreational marijuana is legal in Colorado, the 2014 Denver County Fair this summer will feature cannabis-themed contests like a pot brownie baking competition and a joint-rolling challenge.

All of the action will go down at a 21-plus “Pot Pavilion” and the judging will be done off-site with photos taking the place of the winning entries at the fairgrounds.

"We thought it was time for us to take that leap and represent one of the things Denver has going on," said the fair's marketing and creative director, Tracy Weil.

The fair already features a drag queen pageant, tattoo contests and a diorama competition that involves Peeps candies.

According to the Pot Pavilion’s website:

“Blue Ribbon competitions, live music, pot-themed vendors and entertainment will make this a must-see stop at the 2014 Fair! you will KNOW you are in the Mile High City!...In compliance with Denver’s new laws, there will be no marijuana allowed on the premises during this event. Judging for some categories in the Pot Pavilion will be held offsite. Attendees over 21 will be able to experience cutting edge Denver pot culture in a safe, fun, and educational environment.”

The pavilion will also feature a laser show, Grateful Dead karaoke and a Doritos-eating contest.

"Our motto has always been, 'We're mixing up a big side of tradition with a side of now,'" said fair co-founder Dana Cain. "We had to do it. Pot is legal here -- it's yet another urban agricultural crop."

In addition to leaving with a blue ribbon, contest winners will also take home $20.
