Wall Street Journal employee finds dead frog in salad from Pret A Manger

A Wall Street Journal employee had made it about halfway through a nicoise salad from Pret A Manger when she made a discovery that would leave most people feeling a little green -- a two-inch long dead frog in the lettuce

In order to help substantiate what she had found, the employee called co-workers over to her desk to take a look.

The woman brought the salad back to Pret A Manger location where she purchased it and received a refund, a voucher for a free lunch and an apology from the store manager.

“We are so regretful that this has happened,” said the vice president of brand marketing for the company in the U.S., Ellen Roggemann. “We don’t use any pesticides with our greens and they go through multiple washing cycles. An unfortunate piece of organic matter has made its way through.”

Roggemann said the company strives to sell “handmade natural food,” that often happens to be made from organic ingredients. The company released a statement in response to the incident.

“At Pret A Manger, we take issues like this very seriously. Our lettuce is sourced from farms that do not use any pesticides on its produce, therefore organic matter does very rarely manage to pass through our production process. We are currently looking into this issue to make every effort that this does not happen again.”
