Gay couple booted from Texas country-Western club for dancing together

Doing the Texas two-step (or something like it) at the Cactus Country Club on Saturday night led to a gay couple being asked to leave and issued a no trespassing warning.

Justin Meyer and James Douglas said that the country Western club’s owner told them he was just following company policy.

"He told me they have a policy that states that they don't allow males to dance with males to country songs. I said just country, and he said yes,” Douglas said.

Meyer and Douglas were told they couldn’t dance together because they were men and also cited security reasons.

"I feel like it's complete discrimination. I don't understand,” Meyer said. "I said will you please show me your policy but he kept brushing it under the table."

Roger Gearhart, a corporate spokesperson for Cactus Canyon, says the club does have a policy that prohibits men from dancing together. "For many decades it's acceptable for women to dance together in all kind of clubs... But it's not acceptable for men to dance together in the type of business that we run,” he said.

"Why should we feel like we are afraid to go out in public just because of the way we were born?” the couple asked.
