Gabila's, which is known for making its “Old Fashioned Coney Island Square Knish,” updated its situation via Facebook in late October.
“For those who have been wondering, our famous square Knishes will be back on the shelves in a few weeks. Unfortunately, damage caused by a fire has halted our production. All of our other delicious products can still be found, including our baked Knishes.”
For fans of the food, the knishes can’t be back soon enough.
“All I have are round baked knishes, no fried square ones,” said Kenny Kohn, the chef at Katz’s Delicatessen on East Houston Street. “If you have a suitcase full of money I can’t get you one.”
Gabila’s claims to have sold more than 1.3 billion knishes.
“I don’t know what’s going on, but I need my knish fix,” said knish customer John Costelloe.
According to a Facebook message that was posted on Monday, there’s hope.
“We want to thank all of our faithful customers for there support. Gabila's will be back better then ever within the next few weeks.”
Whether that happens by Thanksgivukkah remains to be seen.
