(UPI) -- A chase that began late last Friday when police attempted to stop a vehicle for defective equipment ended with a Michigan State Police trooper and a suspect falling off a highway overpass in Saginaw County.

After the vehicle refused to stop, troopers used “stop sticks” and a “precision immobilization technique,” to stop the car.

The suspect, identified as a 41-year-old man out on tether for alcohol-related charges, then “exited his vehicle and climbed over a guardrail on a freeway overpass,” according to police.

“When the trooper grabbed him, they both went over the ledge, landing approximately 25 to 35 feet below,” the report states. The trooper and the suspect were both hospitalized and were in stable condition as of Saturday morning.

The trooper has since been released from the hospital and is on paid leave while recovering at home. Additional information about the suspect's injuries has not been released.
