Kansas denies marijuana advocacy group's request to adopt highway

A Kansas group supporting marijuana legalization had its application to adopt a highway denied by the state, and they say it's because of their position on pot.

“We don’t see any reason for the rejection, other than we like to tell the truth about cannabis,” said Fire It Up Kansas founder Mike Golden.

State officials said the reason was because possession, consumption and distribution of marijuana are illegal in Kansas.

"We don't want to advertise for that because their name is gonna be on our signs and I don't think that's acceptable," said Benny Tarverdi, of the Kansas Department of Transportation.

The KDOT says this is only the second application the department has rejected in the last ten years. The first was from the KKK. The department is actively seeking groups to adopt highways.

Fire It Up Kansas says it will let KDOT reconsider its application before they contact the American Civil Liberties Union.
