State officials said the reason was because possession, consumption and distribution of marijuana are illegal in Kansas.
"We don't want to advertise for that because their name is gonna be on our signs and I don't think that's acceptable," said Benny Tarverdi, of the Kansas Department of Transportation.
The KDOT says this is only the second application the department has rejected in the last ten years. The first was from the KKK. The department is actively seeking groups to adopt highways.
Fire It Up Kansas says it will let KDOT reconsider its application before they contact the American Civil Liberties Union.
