Pittsburgh airport workers find traveler's lost diamond in bathroom

Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Employees at Pittsburgh International Airport were able to reunite a traveler with a diamond that fell off her ring in a bathroom.

Kristen and Brett Tunno of Oakdale said they flew from Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, had a layover in Minnesota, arrived in Pittsburgh and were preparing to leave in their car when Kristen Tunno realized the middle diamond was missing from her ring.

Tunno said the ring had recently been given to her by her 99-year-old grandmother.

She had no idea if the diamond had fallen off at any of the three airports or on a plane, so she quickly gave up hope of finding it.

Brett Tunno said he wasn't quite ready to surrender.

"Since it was a late flight, I thought if I called early in the morning, we might have a chance," he told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

He filed a missing property report on Pittsburgh International Airport's website and set an alarm to call the next morning at 6 a.m.

April Laukaitis, a customer service worker at the airport, arrived at 5 a.m. and saw Tunno's report, which said the couple had only visited Concourse D, a restroom and baggage claim.

Laukaitis searched two restrooms, and in the second she found the diamond on the floor.

She alerted information desk worker Sharon Barley, who happened to be on the phone with Brett Tunno at the time.

Kristen Tunno was overjoyed to hear the news.

"It was absolutely insane that with those odds she found it," she said. "It could have been anywhere."

The couple returned to the airport to retrieve the diamond, and they were able to thank Laukaitis and Barley in person.

"The story of the diamond and the whirlwind that it has created has been such a special experience for my grandmother and me to share," Kristen Tunno said. "With her being 99 it's so wonderful to have these memories."
