Sept. 29 (UPI) -- A Maryland couple on a long drive home made a pit stop in Virginia and bought a Powerball ticket that earned them a $1 million prize.

Christine Oberheitmann told Virginia Lottery officials she and her husband were driving home to Berlin, Md., when they made a stop at Sting-Ray's in Cape Charles, Va.

Oberheitmann said she noticed while inside the store that the Powerball jackpot for the Sept. 9 drawing had grown to $500 million.

"I typically only play when the jackpot gets big," Oberheitmann said.

She bought a ticket and continued the journey home, where the couple later learned the ticket had matched all five white balls in the drawing: 11-19-29-63-68.

Oberheitmann and her husband made a second trip to Virginia to claim their prize at the lottery office in Hampton.

"We'll probably stop at the store on the way home to take a selfie," she said.
