Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The Perth Zoo in Western Australia confirmed a Javan gibbon was on the loose for about 30 minutes after taking a big swing out of his enclosure.

Zoo officials said members of the public were escorted out of the area as a precaution while the ape was on the loose.

"One of Perth Zoo's Javan gibbons was over-exuberant while swinging and found himself in a tree outside of his habitat," the zoo said in a statement provided to 7News. "The zoo's expert primate and veterinary teams acted quickly and have safely sedated him and will now move him to a safe area behind-the-scenes for monitoring."

Officials said the escapee was reunited with the rest of the gibbon troop and they appeared to be "settled and well" in an off-exhibit area.
