June 7 (UPI) -- A Rhode Island zoo announced the birth of a baby tamandua, a South American animal also known as a lesser anteater.

The Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence announced in a Facebook post that the yet-unnamed baby was born recently to mother Carina and father Salvador in the zoo's Faces of the Rainforest habitat.

The zoo said the baby and mother are being kept off-display while zookeepers and veterinarians monitor their progress and ensure they are bonding.

"Carina and Salvador were paired through a recommendation from the Southern Tamandua Species Survival Plan Program, in cooperation with The Association of Zoos and Aquariums, to establish and maintain a healthy and genetically diverse population," the post said.
