Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Police and animal control officers in Michigan are hunting for an exotic African cat that escaped from a local property.

The Royal Oak Police Department said a woman who owns four African caracal cats told officers two of the felines escaped through a gate that was left open on her property.

One of the caracals was recaptured when it was spotted near the Royal Oak Schools administration building, but the other remains on the loose, police said.

"The owner says they present no harm to humans," Royal Oak Police Lt. Albert Carter told the Detroit News. "They are very passive, nocturnal animals."

Royal Oak Schools posted a warning on Facebook urging members of the public not to approach the cat if they spot it.
