Japanese sisters dubbed world's oldest twins at 107

Sept. 20 (UPI) -- A pair of Japanese sisters born in 1913 were awarded the Guinness World Record for the oldest living identical twins at age 107 years, 300 days.

Umeno Sumiyama and Koume Kodama, who were born on Shodo Island, Kagawa Prefecture, on Nov. 5, 1913, were awarded the Guinness World Record when their ages were verified Sept. 1, the record-keeping organization said.

The twins, who live in separate care homes, were presented with their certificates via mail due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The record was previously held by fellow Japan residents Kin Narita and Gin Kanie. Kin Narita died at age 107 years,175 days in 2000.

Care home workers said Sumiyama became emotional and was in tears when she was presented with the certificate. Kodama, whose memory has been deteriorating, was unable to comprehend the significance of the certificate, Guinness said.
