More than 60 ducks relocated after overrunning Louisiana neighborhood

July 2 (UPI) -- Officials in Louisiana said more than 60 ducks were relocated from a neighborhood after residents complained of the birds overrunning their properties and following pedestrians.

Residents of the Summa Court area in East Baton Rouge Parish said what was initially a small population of ducks gradually increased to more than 60 of the birds, and the water fowl proved to be a nuisance.

"We can't even open our blinds because the ducks will be there. If they hear a blind go up or the door jiggle, they'll fly up," Jennifer Richardson told WBRZ-TV.

Neighbors said animal lovers who heard about the duck problem started visiting the area this week to adopt some of the flock.

Parish employees visited the neighborhood Thursday and relocated the remaining animals, about a dozen ducks, to a pond in Ascension where the property owner had agreed to allow the birds to live.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said the state generally has a high duck population due to the birds wintering and breeding in the region.

"Waterfowl populations are highly dynamic -- they change from year to year in response to changing hydrology and land uses, which affect habitat quality in both breeding and wintering areas," the department's website states.
