Arizona dog rescued from bottom of mine shaft

June 22 (UPI) -- An Arizona sheriff's office rescued a dog that wandered into a mine shaft and became trapped about 100 feet underground.

The Mohave County Sheriff's Office said a crew from the Animal Enforcement & Search and Rescue team was summoned to he mine shaft near Katherine Mine, north of Bullhead City, when a 1-year-old dog named Shelby was reported trapped at the bottom of a mine shaft.

Shelby's owners reported they could see the dog moving around at the bottom of the shaft, but they had no way to reach her.

The sheriff's office crew set up a technical rope rescue system and lowered a rescuer down into the shaft to fit Shelby into a harness for hoisting to the surface.

Once the dog was brought up, rescuers found only a few bumps and bruises from her ordeal. She was released to her owners.
