Jan. 29 (UPI) -- A Kansas man seeking a Guinness World Record for his collection of Kansas City Chiefs memorabilia said his collection has grown to 643 pieces -- and garnered international attention.

Curt Herrman, of Manhattan, said he started collecting Chiefs memorabilia after the team won Super Bowl IV when he was 8 years old. He applied for a Guinness World Record in early 2020 to have his then-collection of about 550 pieces of memorabilia officially recognized as the world's largest.

Herrman said he has yet to hear back from Guinness, but his application led being contacted by Spain-based Official World Records.

"The one in Spain contacted me in October and said they had seen my application on the Guinness website. So they looked into it, they asked a lot of questions, and I sent a copy of my database," he said.

"Three people verified it for me, and then on Monday the OWR came back and said, 'congratulations. We've approved you for the world record,'" Herrman told KSNT-TV.

He said the international attention his collection has received has helped him grow it to 643 items. He said he hopes to one day have a Kansas City Chiefs player tour with his collection.

Herrman said his collection is likely to grow further, as the team plays the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV on Feb. 7.
