Jan. 28 (UPI) -- A North Carolina man who adopted his late father's lottery numbers ended up winning a $1 million prize using the special set of lucky digits.

Kevin Halterman, of Pfafftown, told North Carolina Education Lottery officials he bought a Powerball ticket from the Family Fare store in Winston-Salem using the numbers he has been playing for almost a year.

"My dad passed away in March and he had some numbers that he used to play," he said. "I dug them back up and I started playing them and those happened to be the numbers that hit."

The numbers earned Halterman a $1 million jackpot, matching all give white balls in Saturday's drawing.

"I just figure he helped me out a lot," Halterman said. "I'm lucky."
