Sept. 6 (UPI) -- The Kansas Highway Patrol said an escape artist tortoise was returned to its owner after wandering about 1 1/2 miles in a few days on the loose

The KHP's Troop C said in a Facebook post that a witness came to the tortoise's rescue when it was spotted attempting to cross a road near some baseball fields in Salina.

The tortoise had an ID tag on its shell that helped troopers locate its owner.

The highway patrol initially said the tortoise had been missing for three years, but later corrected that the tortoise is a serial escape artist and had been on the loose for only a few days in the latest incident.

"This turtle is huge," the post said.
