Mississippi town breaks Guinness record when 754 eat watermelon

Aug. 7 (UPI) -- A Mississippi town broke a Guinness World Record when it gathered 754 people to eat watermelon at the same time.

The Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce said its 50th Watermelon Carnival featured 754 people eating watermelon at the same time at the Crawford Sports Complex, smashing the previous record of 259 people.

Officials said participants included visitors from as far away as Las Vegas and New York.

The chamber said evidence from the melon-eating event is being submitted to Guinness for official recognition.
