July 31 (UPI) -- Authorities in New York state said a herd of 75 loose buffalo are proving difficult to capture and are believed to have split up into smaller groups.
Trooper Aga Dembinska said the animals appear to have split into three or four smaller groups, making them more difficult to track.
The owner of the Sharon farm where the buffalo escaped said the animals broke through a gate. The farmer said the escaped herd includes 30 adult buffalo, three of them bulls, and 45 calves, about half of which are bulls.
Police are warning residents not to try to approach the buffalo and to instead contact authorities if they are spotted.
