Dec. 20 (UPI) -- A mysterious light appeared in the evening sky over San Francisco, sparking speculation about a meteor or a satellite launch.
Residents from Lake Tahoe to Ventura in the San Francisco area reported seeing the mysterious trail of light and smoke around sundown Wednesday, and many posted photos or videos to social media.
There was speculation the light could be tied to a Delta IV Heavy rocket, which had been scheduled to launch with a payload of satellites Wednesday evening from Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County, but officials said the launch had been delayed until Thursday evening.
Speculation also swirled about three astronauts who departed the International Space Station, headed for Kazakhstan, just minutes before the light appeared, but it was unclear whether their path would take them over California.
The National Weather Service said it was investigating "growing" evidence that the object was a meteor.
The Lick Observatory in Mount Hamilton said the object was likely a meteor and the pattern in the sky was its trail being illuminated by the sunset.
