Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Police in Germany launched a pursuit when four zebras escaped from a Christmas circus and ran loose through a city's downtown.

Investigators said the zebras escaped from a Christmas circus in Dresden and were spotted by multiple witnesses running through the downtown area of the city, including past the Saxony state parliament building on the banks of the Elbe River.

Valentin Lippmann, a member of the Saxony state parliament, tweeted a photo of two of the zebras running loose next to the river.

Police said the zebras were rounded up and returned to the circus, but one of the animals died as a result of stress.

One officer sustained minor injuries from being kicked by a zebra, police said.
