Nov. 28 (UPI) -- A Las Vegas elementary school was awarded a Guinness World Record for assembling a chain of pipe cleaners measuring more than 11 miles long.
The record-keeping organization said this week Eileen Brookman Elementary School broke the record in March, when more than 700 students helped assemble the pipe cleaner chain as part of a reading challenge.
Each block of ten pipe cleaners represents a book that a student read and successfully took an Accelerated Reader comprehension test about.
"It really just lit a fire in them," fourth grade teacher Alana London told KLAS-TV. "We decided that kids respond to challenges and so we offered this challenge to them."
The school previously set a Guinness record in 2016 when it assembled the longest continuous chain of glow sticks as part of a similar reading challenge.
