Huge beehive removed from downtown Chicago tree

June 26 (UPI) -- Crews were summoned to a tree on a busy street in the Chicago Loop to remove a massive beehive spotted by pedestrians.

Officials said witnesses walking along North State Street near West Adams Street on Monday looked up to see thousands of bees swarming around the hive, which appeared to be about 3 feet long.

Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation crews were summoned to the scene to remove the hive and relocate the bees.

The incident was not the first time unexpected bees have made their way to the Loop -- in June 2006 bees were photographed swarming around a downtown light pole and preventing the owners of two bicycles from reaching their bee-covered rides. Professional beekeepers were called to the scene to relocate the insects.
