June 18 (UPI) -- Floridian duo Jack Hubbard of Lakeland and his friend, professional trapper Mike Kimmel of Indiantown, rescued an alligator in the Everglades from an attacking python.

Hubbard shared video of the rescue with Fox 13 which features Kimmel leaping into action upon discovering that a python was wrapping itself around the alligator, nearly choking it to death.

"When we got closer we could tell it was attacking an alligator," Hubbard said. "The alligator was almost dead."

Kimmel grabbed the snake which caused it to loosen its grip on the alligator, saving its life in the process.

Pythons are an invasive species in the Everglades and Hubbard and Kimmel are participating in a project to help remove the snakes from the area. The Pythons have decimated food sources for predators present in the Everglades such as alligators and panthers.

"The pythons will never go away, but hopefully our efforts in removing some of these pythons will help the population stabilize a little bit for the other animals that are there," Hubbard said.
