Dorothy Harris of Wentzville said she and her husband, Sam, noticed their cows wandering near a pond Tuesday evening and they discovered Wednesday morning that one of the cows had sank up to her shoulders in the thick mud. A neighbor arrived on the scene with a backhoe and used the construction vehicle to dig a path for the cow to climb out of the mud. The rescue took about an hour and 20 minutes, firefighters said. The cow, which is pregnant, was able to walk to a nearby pasture and graze after the rescue.
