May 14 (UPI) -- A Florida sheriff's department said a sergeant who spotted what he initially thought to be a turtle under a bridge ended up rescuing a small dog.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office said Marine Unit Sgt. Brian Parkton spotted what he initially thought was a sea turtle under the Marler Bridge in Destin.

Parkton took a closer look and realized the "turtle" was covered in white fur -- and was actually a dog.

The sergeant fished the dog out of the water and was later able to return the canine to his owners, who said their pet had fallen from a pontoon boat earlier in the day.
