Texas police warn of movie prop money being passed off as real

Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Police in Texas are warning residents to be on the lookout for movie prop money being passed off as real currency in El Paso.

The El Paso Police Department said currency has been spotted around the city bearing serial numbers and banknote identifiers, but also featuring the phrase: "For Motion Picture Use Only."

The money is designed to serve as a prop for films and television.

"The style of the money has been around for a few years, but we haven't seen a whole lot of it here in El Paso," police spokesman Darrel Petry told KFOX-TV. "As of lately, we've had several cases where this type of money has turned up."

Police are asking residents to keep a lookout for the fake bills and keep track of where they spot them, including any details about the person who used the fake cash and their vehicle.

"We would like for people to be the best possible witness they can be," Petry said. "All of those details will help the police in solving your case."

Police said the fake money is believed to be in denominations of $20, $50 and $100.
