Museum of Selfies to celebrate self-shot photos in Los Angeles suburb

Dec. 21 (UPI) -- The co-founders of the soon-to-open Museum of Selfies in the Los Angeles area said they are hoping people will learn a few things about art while they have their fun.

The museum, set to open in January in Glendale, features multiple photo op locations where visitors are encouraged to snap their own selfies, including such Instagram-mainstay selfie genres as the food selfie, the bathroom mirror pic and a faux rooftop for a "high-up selfie" experience.

"We definitely want people to laugh or be surprised by the entire exhibit," co-founder Tommy Honton told Mashable. "So we have the visual humor where people walk up, and they engage with the space. And we're hoping they laugh, or they're surprised, or are amused, and that they can't help but want to take a picture with it."

The more unusual selfie locations inside the museum include a Game of Thrones-inspired Iron Throne made of selfie sticks.

The museum also includes informative exhibits, such as a "narcissist" installation chronicling the stories of those who lost their lives in a quixotic quest for a perfect selfie, and the co-founders have pledged a Guinness World Records stunt will be in the near future.

The co-founders said they also want visitors to learn about the connection between the modern selfie and the tradition of self-portraits.

"People know selfies, people know the word, and they do it," Honton said. "So the hope is that when they come in and see, oh wait, people have been depicting themselves for a lot longer than I realized, they can start feeling that art and history is a little more open than it seems."
