Dec. 18 (UPI) -- A cat that ran away from its Oregon home just before its family moved to Louisiana has been found a year and a half later, the family said.

Betty and John Moore said their cat, Buddy, vanished from their home in Tillamook just before they moved to Louisiana, and they made multiple trips back to Oregon to search for the feline, but they had no luck.

The couple said they were shocked and elated when Oregon group United Paws got in touch with them last week to say Buddy had been found at a homeless shelter.

The Moores said they are now trying to get their cat home for the holidays.

"What are the odds of people actually finding him... it's a great story -- homeless kitty found at homeless shelter trying to get home for Christmas," John Moore told KATU-TV.

United Paws set up a GoFundMe to raise money for Buddy's trip to Louisiana. The group is trying to find airfare for the cat and a round trip for an adult to accompany the cat.

"Won't you help us get this homeless cat, found at a homeless shelter, back home to the people who love him, in time for Christmas?" the group said.

United Paws said any extra money raised by the effort will go toward helping shelter animals in Tillamook County.
