Dec. 14 (UPI) -- A group of New York state residents banded together to rescue a deer named "Jughead" after getting a plastic pretzel container stuck over its head.

Dawn Michael, of Long Island's Mastic Beach, said in a Facebook post that she and her husband spent hours on multiple days searching for the deer spotted with the plastic jug on its head, and police even joined in the search at one point.

She said the deer was finally located Tuesday night, and a group of residents joined the couple to free the deer from the jug.

One member of the search party threw her body on the deer to hold it down while the others worked to pull the jug off its head "with some difficulty."

The deer, which appeared dehydrated but otherwise healthy, was able to run off after the rescue.

"It really restored my faith in people and showed me the true beauty in the people of Mastic Beach," Michael wrote. "Our little 'Jughead' is free and I'm sure he has a nice full belly for the first time in six days!"
