Hammy the deer wandering Canada with hammock caught in antler

Nov. 21 (UPI) -- A deer that has been wandering British Columbia with a hammock caught in its antlers for months has been dubbed "Hammy" by locals.

Conservation officers said they have been on the trail of the deer since August, when Prince Rupert resident Marcedes Mack first spotted the buck with its antlers caught in the purple hammock.

Police cut the hammock to free the buck, but it ran off with the hammock still wrapped around one antler, residents said.

Locals dubbed the deer Hammy and have been chronicling sightings on a Facebook group.

The deer was spotted wandering Friday in the Crestview area and photos snapped by witness Trina Swick show Hammy was apparently able to free one of his antlers, although the other remains tangled in the hammock.

Conservation officers said they are hoping to untangle Hammy before the rutting season, when his hammock-locked antler could make him vulnerable to attacks from other bucks.
