Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Officials at a Washington state Navy base confirmed one of their aircraft was behind a contrail drawing of male genitalia spotted over a residential area.

Residents in Omak, where the image was clearly visible in the sky, snapped photos on Thursday when a Naval aircraft drew a penis and testicles in the sky using its contrails.

Some Okanogan County residents branded the drawing obscene and complained about it being plastered across the sky in view of local children.

The airspace where the drawing appeared is part of the Okanagan Military Operating Area, a restricted airspace often used by military pilots for training purposes.

Naval Air Station Whidbey Island officials released a statement to KREM-TV confirming a Navy aircraft was to blame for the drawing.

"The Navy holds its aircrew to the highest standards and we find this absolutely unacceptable, of zero training value and we are holding the crew accountable," the statement read.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it is not investigating the incident, as it does not appear the act posed any safety risk. An FAA representative said the agency "cannot police morality."
