The bottle cap tore a hole in the can of pepper spray, which expelled its contents into the theater.
The movie theater was evacuated and firefighters determined it would have to remain closed for the night.
The fire department said no serious injuries were reported from the incident.
"Please do not open beer bottles with pepper spray cartridges," the fire department said in a Facebook post. "Also don't use handguns, grenades, bayonets, air bombs or brass knuckles.
