Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Police in Wales said reports of lynx sightings are coming in after one of the big cats escaped from a local zoo.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the lynx escaped at some point last week from Borth Wild Animal Kingdom, near Aberystwyth, and was spotted Sunday from a police helicopter.

Police said a second sighting was reported later the same day.

Tracy Tweedy, co-owner of the zoo, said keepers had thought the lynx was hiding in its enclosure until a Sunday check verified the animal was not on the premises.

"She's done this before, hidden herself away when she's been slightly injured, and when she's feeling better she comes out," Tweedy told the BBC.

Police warned the lynx could pose a danger to pets in the area.

"The lynx is unlikely to approach people, but may attempt to take livestock or pets as food," police said in a statement to The Telegraph. "We do however advise that the animal should not be approached as it could become aggressive if cornered. It is believed that the lynx remains in fairly close proximity to the Animalarium, but of course it could potentially go further afield."
