Oct. 19 (UPI) -- A South Carolina woman's message in a bottle finally found its way to shore nearly three decades after she first wrote it.

Miranda Chavez shared a photo of the letter which she placed in a glass bottle and cast off the shore of Edisto Beach in 1988 after a couple in Georgia discovered the 29-year-old message.

"The most amazing thing just happened! I received a message on Facebook where Linda Shouse Humphries found a message in a bottle that I put in the Ocean at Edisto Beach on September 26, 1988. I was 8 years old!" Chavez wrote Saturday. "She found it on Sapelo Island, GA and is sending it to me!"

Chavez had long forgotten about the letter, which she assumed was swallowed in Hurricane Hugo less than a year after she sent it off.

Much to her surprise, Linda Humphries and her husband David found the letter just 90 miles down the coast after their home state of Georgia had been hit by Hurricane Irma.

"It really does confirm the whole six degrees of separation theory," Chavez said. "I believe everything happens for a reason."

Humphries managed to track Chavez down despite the fact the address she wrote on the letter no longer exists.

"That was so long ago," Chavez said of her childhood home in an interview with CBS News. "It would be pretty difficult to find me."

Chavez added that in addition to being reminded of the 29-year-old letter, the experience also helped her reconnect with several of her former classmates.

"I lost contact with all of those people when I moved from that town," she said. "Not only have I made new friends, like Linda and David, but I've also been able to reconnect with people."
