Oct. 18 (UPI) -- A returning Jeopardy! champion managed to come out on top for a third night in a row, but with an unusual distinction -- he won only $1.

Manny Abell, a naval officer from Lacey, Wash., managed to best his competitors on Tuesday night, but he ended up winning just $1 when all three players missed the Final Jeopardy question.

"What country bordered the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf?" read the question that tripped up all three contestants.

Abell guessed Iraq, the correct answer was Iran.

Jeopardy! said Abell is only the second regular champion to win with a total of only $1, after Air Force Lt. Col. Darryl Scott pulled off a similar feat in 1993. There have also been two Celebrity Jeopardy! contestants who won with just $1, Benjamin Salisbury in 1997 and Brandi Chastain in 2001.

Abell's win Tuesday brought his three-night total to $42,798.
