Escaped bison wander through Ohio neighborhood

Oct. 17 (UPI) -- A herd of six bison escaped from a farm in Ohio and drew attention when they roamed through back yards in a residential neighborhood.

Residents of the Grant Hill Estates area of Grove City said they were shocked Sunday when the six big bovine came wandering through their yards.

Police were summoned to the scene.

"They are a wild animal. You have to get them taken care of especially when it's a neighborhood like this," neighbor Scott Stachler told WSYX-TV. "That is why the police department was on it so fast and got them rounded up pretty quick."

Farmer Bob Sexten said the bison escaped when he accidentally left a gate open.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources suggested the loose bison be euthanized to prevent a potentially dangerous situation.

Police helped herd the bison to a 100-acre field, where Sexten and some other local farmers shot the animals.

Sexten said the bison were being raised for meat.

Deputies were on the scene when the farmers culled the buffalo, but they did not participate in the shooting, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office said.
