Oct. 10 (UPI) -- A California sheriff's deputy tricked his girlfriend into believing she had been pulled over for a DUI in a surprise proposal.

Palmdale Sheriff's Station shared video of Deputy Kevin Bowes proposing to his girlfriend as she stood with another officer on the side of the road during the fake DUI.

"She thought she was a suspect DUI driver but it was a traffic stop that changed her life," the station said.

Bowes snuck up behind his girlfriend and took one knee behind her as she participated in a sobriety test.

Bowes settled into place as another deputy, who was in on the stunt, instructed his girlfriend to turn around where she saw her soon-to-be fiance presenting her with an engagement ring.

She shouted with excitement before kneeling down to embrace Bowes.

"Is that a yes?" he joked.

The sheriff's office congratulated the couple on their engagement and Bowes for completing the elaborate stunt.

"Congratulations to future Mrs. Deputy Bowes," the station said. " We are so happy for you brother, and thank you for allowing us to be part of this wonderful moment. Welcome to the Tan and Green family, and may you have a wonderful life together."
