Deadly snake mistaken for toy at Australian cafe

Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Wildlife trappers were summoned to an Australian cafe to capture a deadly eastern brown snake that showed up for brunch.

Nick Sovechles, owner of Lexies on the Beach in Newcastle, New South Wales, said he initially thought the serpent was an abandoned toy when he spotted it curled up with a plant in the eatery's entryway on Sunday.

"I leaned down to have a close look and it looked like a toy snake someone had put in there as a joke and as I slowly started to reach in, its head moved," he told The Newcastle Herald.

William Marmulla, a trapper with Native & Feral Pest Management, arrived on the scene and bagged the snake.

"Usually a brown snake would avoid humans, but today William Marmulla visited Lexies On The Beach to catch a [5-foot] eastern brown snake which gave a few patrons a bit of a surprise," Native & Feral Pest Management said in a Facebook post. "Now really, it probably only wanted a mocha and a mouse to share."

Manager Vinny Sovechles said customers enjoyed the life entertainment.

"A lot of the customers actually really enjoyed it, the kids really liked it," he said.

"We had a good morning for breakfast and then lunch died off, nearly literally," Sovechles quipped.
