Oct. 4 (UPI) -- A British man learned he won the lottery a month late after reading about a missing winner in the newspaper.

Martin Crighton, 46, was reminded he had purchased a EuroMillions ticket after reading a story about a lottery winner that had yet to come forward in his local newspaper.

"It jogged my memory. I always play the lottery and it occurred to me that maybe I hadn't checked all of my tickets. When I got home that evening I started to check in drawers and everywhere I normally put my tickets for safe-keeping," he said.

After frantically searching Crighton found the winning ticket tucked behind receipts and business cards in his wallet.

"I looked in the paper and the code matched," he said. "I just thought this cannot be true."

Crighton brought the ticket to his friend, pub owner Shaun Davis, who confirmed his ticket was a winner.

"I scanned the ticket on my phone and it came back as a winner! We both just started crying and hugging each other -- and then celebrated with a few beers," Davis said.

Crighton said he continues to work following the windfall, but plans to buy a new home with his winnings.

"Life will just be so much easier now. I love my job and the people I work for have become really good friends so I certainly have no plans to stop working," he said. "I am just delighted that I will now be able to afford to buy my own home and never have any money worries ever again!"
