Hawk flies into California store, evades capture for days

Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Employees at a California supermarket said a hawk flew into the store and has managed to evade capture for two days and counting.

Francisco Hernandez, a manager at Krisp Beverages + Natural Foods in the Golden Hill area of San Diego said the hawk flew into the store about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday while trying to catch a pigeon in the doorway.

Workers who spent hours trying unsuccessfully to capture the hawk said the bird of prey seems fond of perching in the store's giant artificial tree.

Volunteers with animal emergency rescue tried to gently capture the hawk in a net Wednesday, but it fled to a hiding place inside the store's roof.

San Diego County Animal Control said it could not do anything to help the store or the bird.

"Customers think it's our mascot!" Hernandez told KNBC-TV. "This happened several years ago too."

He said the hawk that previously flew into the store was safely captured in a net and released outside.
