July 31 (UPI) -- A Kentucky doctor preparing to give birth ended up delivering another woman's baby while in her hospital gown.

Dr. Amanda Hess was preparing to have labor induced at Frankfort Regional Medical Center when she heard a woman she had treated before was giving birth and experiencing complications, a fellow doctor, Hala Sabry, wrote on Facebook.

Hess said the physician on call had just left, so she decided to leap into action.

"I put on some boots over my flip flops and found another gown to cover myself up and did put my stuff to deliver on and delivered a baby," Hess told WLEX-TV. "I had actually taken a call the day before, so I thought really that I was working up to the last minute. But this was literally 'til the last second."

The patient, Leah Halliday-Johnson, 38, said she had no idea Hess wasn't actually on call when she showed up to help.

"I said, OK, it's great to see you. Can I push now?" Halliday-Johnson told People.com. "She was in complete doctor mode. She just heard somebody needed help."

"She's a really special person," Halliday-Johnson said. "I'm thankful for her."

Hess later gave birth to a healthy girl, Ellen Joyce.
