July 25 (UPI) -- A Tinder couple who messaged each other intermittently for years without meeting up saw each other for the first time on Tuesday morning.

Josh Avsec, 22, and Michelle Arendas, 21, both students at Kent State University, met each other for the first time on the set of Good Morning America after exchanging a series of joke messages on the dating app for three years.

"This is a dream come true. I can't believe I'm seeing her right now," Avsec said when the pair laid eyes on each other for the first time.

Earlier in July Tinder offered the couple the opportunity to take a trip to Hawaii for their first date after Avsec shared a screenshot of their messages on Twitter.

Arendas was added to the Twitter conversation, which was the first time the pair had interacted outside of Tinder.

"I didn't even know Michelle's last name until the day after I posted it and a friend of a friend commented and tagged her on it," Avsec said.

During their Good Morning America appearance the couple were separated by a large barrier as hosts Michael Strahan and Lara Spencer interviewed them about their story and asked about their idea of a perfect date.

After unveiling the pair had the same taste in snacks and television shows, they were finally allowed to meet for the first time before their trip to Maui.

"My only expectation is to enjoy our trip and enjoy getting to know each other," Ardenas said. "I can absolutely not wait to be on the beach."

While Ardenas was eager to finally spend some time with Avsec, she told People her stubbornness was what prevented them from meeting despite living on the same campus.

"I'm stubborn and I wasn't going to be the one to ruin a good joke like that," she said. "I'm stubborn and I'm committed to my sense of humor, that was definitely it for me. I didn't want to be the one to break the joke."

The pair said it was too early to determine whether they would pursue a relationship following the trip, but Avsec said he believed there was potential.

"Im a really good judge of character so I can at least tell if I'm not going to enjoy being around someone, and I haven't gotten any of that vibe yet so, so far, so good," he said.
