July 20 (UPI) -- Philadelphia police said a woman who stole a taxi picked up fares and pretended to be a cab driver before she was arrested by officers.

The Philadelphia Police Department said the 65-year-old suspect hailed a cab about midnight Thursday and she asked the driver to pull over while en route to the Sugarhouse Casino.

The woman told the driver she wanted to get something to drink, and the man got out to help the woman because she seemed to be having difficulty walking, police said.

Police said the woman jumped into the driver's seat and drove away, leaving the cab driver stranded in the road.

"After stealing the cab, she actually drove several blocks and picked up a fare," Chief Inspector Scott Small told KYW-TV.

Police said there was a 23-year-old woman and a baby in the back seat when officers caught up to the cab. The woman told police she did not know the cab had been stolen and she had thought the suspect was a legitimate cab driver.

"I don't think I've ever seen anything like that before," Small told Philly.com of the "bizarre" crime. "An unusual job with a happy ending."

The suspect will be charged with auto theft and receiving stolen property, police said.
