July 7 (UPI) -- A Texas woman snapped a smiling selfie in a hospital delivery room while her younger sister gave birth to her first child.
Kat Armendariz, 27, captured the viral image of her sister Kimberly, 20, screaming in pain as she was about to give birth.
"SELFIE! While my sister is about to shove a baby out her vag!" Armendariz wrote.
The elder sister, who has five children of her own, told Inside Edition she had previously informed her sister that she planned to capture the moment.
"I told her, 'I am going to take this selfie and you can thank me later,'" Armendariz said. "I warned her that I wanted to take a selfie while she was in pain because I did my time already."
Armendariz told Mashable her sister wasn't in much pain at first, but she waited for the perfect opportunity to snap the selfie.
"She started to feel it and right when she was like, 'Oh my god I can't take this,' I took the photo," she said.
Kimberly gave birth to a boy named Zayden after 15 hours of labor and said her sister successfully captured one of her greatest moments of pain.
"I didn't know what I was going to feel, but at that moment, she got it right on time," the younger sister said.
The photo was viewed more than 500,000 on image sharing site imgur, and Armendariz received "a lot of backlash" for making light of her sister's pain.
"I wanted to capture that moment from the bottom of my heart. It was out of love," she said. "I am her sister and a pain in the butt."
Despite the backlash, the younger sister shared the sentiment and said she was able to laugh at the situation.
"That is the relationship we have," she said. "I was cool with it. I think it was funny!"
