Ohio police officer hops into buggy to stop runaway horse

June 26 (UPI) -- A police officer in Ohio leapt into an Amish buggy with no driver to corral a runaway horse that dragged it down a local road.

Wooster Police Department shared photos of Sgt. Otis Smith standing over the exhausted horse after he managed to bring the runaway buggy to a halt.

"Every new day brings with it new challenges," police said. "This driverless buggy took a morning run."

Smith spotted the rogue buggy barreling toward him at about 7 a.m. on Sunday and realized he had to act quickly to resolve the situation.

"You have that second when it goes by you and you grab hold [of the buggy] and jump on," he said. "I had to be quick."

Police said the horse ran for about 10 miles in the wrong lane while traveling about 20 to 25 miles per hour.

After Smith got into the buggy and pulled the reigns, the horse stopped and collapsed on the floor from exhaustion.

No one was hurt in the incident and police managed to track down the owners to return their horse.

"I'm just glad it turned out ok," Smith said. "That could have been a bigger incident with a 2,000-pound animal running in the wrong lane."
