June 26 (UPI) -- Police in California rescued a tiny kitten found trapped between the northbound and southbound lanes of the Golden Gate Bridge.

California Highway Patrol in Marin shared photos of the orange and white kitten after receiving a call reporting a kitten on the bridge on Saturday afternoon.

"After one pass across the span, the officers were unable to locate the little kitty," police said. "Not wanting to give up on an animal in need, the officers turned around and gave the bridge another pass."

Eventually, officers spotted a tiny feline head poking out from the median separating the flow of traffic and officers blocked the lane to retrieve the stranded kitten.

The rescuers managed to quickly grab hold of the kitten and place it in their patrol car as CHP Officer Smith called a local pet hospital to care for the distressed creature.

Upon arriving at VCA Madera Pet Hospital, the kitten was given a medical examination and a bath before being returned to Smith with a collection of supplies, medicine and a cat carrier.

The kitten didn't have a collar or microchip, making it impossible for staff to locate its potential owners, but Smith offered to foster the newly rescued feline.

Police were baffled at how the kitten made it so far onto the bridge without being struck by a vehicle.

"Until then, this cute little guy, tentatively named Bridges, is on his way to a new home with people who will take great care of him," police said.
