June 22 (UPI) -- Dozens of teenage boys at a secondary school in England wore skirts to school on Thursday after they were prohibited from wearing shorts during the summer heat.

About 50 boys arrived at ISCA Academy wearing skirts after the school refused to modify its policy requiring male students to wear full-length trousers despite the high temperatures.

The protest began on Wednesday when a small number of students turned up in skirts. One was forced to change because the skirt was too short and another was told his legs were too hairy, but the rest were permitted to wear the skirts for the rest of the day.

"The head teacher told them 'Well you can wear a skirt if you like' but I think she was being sarcastic. However, children tend to take you literally and so five boys turned up in skirts today – and because she told them it was ok there was nothing she could do as long as they are school skirts," a mother of one student said.

Nearly 10 times as many students joined the protest the following day, as they arrived wearing skirts and shaved their legs using pink razors on the way to school.

Parents and students hope the protest will encourage the school to implement a warm weather option for boy's uniforms and head teacher Aimee Mitchell suggested a change may be made.

"Shorts are not currently part of our uniform for boys and I would not want to make any changes without consulting both students and their families," she said. "However, with hotter weather becoming more normal, I would be happy to consider a change for the future."

In the meantime, some male students said they will continue to wear skirts because they found them to be more comfortable then their traditional uniform.
