June 19 (UPI) -- A city in Australia will feature an image of Mary Poppins in the traffic lights on its pedestrian walkways to honor the author of the book series.

Fraser Coast Regional Council shared a photo of the first Mary Poppins light that was installed in the city of Maryborough, where author PL Travers was born.

"It's fantastic to see the lights installed in time for the Poppins Festival which runs from June 23 to July 2," the council said. "There is no doubt that they are quirky, and Maryborough does quirky very well."

The city of Melbourne had previously featured female silhouettes on its pedestrian lights, but the lights in Maryborough are the first in Australia to honor a particular figure.

"Melbourne might have its female silhouettes on their pedestrian lights, but this is the first time someone has used the lights to pay homage to Mary Poppins and PL Travers," the council said. "I think people will enjoy and celebrate the link."

Two lights have already been installed at two different intersections and three more are expected to be added before the next financial year.

"It's great to see smiles on people's faces already as they notice the new lights," councillor Paul Truscott said.
